Apple launches new social media site

Last week, Apple launched Ping, a social networking site which is focused on sharing music interests.  The application can be downloaded through the itunes 10 update and according to Apple Chief Executive, Steve Jobs, he expects it to be a huge success.  Eddie Cue, Apple’s vice president of Internet Services claimed “as many more people download itunes 10 in the coming weeks, we expect the Ping community to keep on growing”.  However, critics are unsure, some disagree that it will be competition for Twitter or Facebook but others believe it will be competion for Myspace, the other music social media site.

For now, we’ll have to wait and see, but for the moment it seems like this is another way for Apple to take over!

BP’s online marketing used as damage control

Data has been released revealing that in the aftermath of the oil spill disaster, BP increased their online marketing campaign from $57,000 a month to nearly $3 million.  This huge rise in funds was mainly down to BP buying keywords connected to the oil spill, such as “leak”, “top kill”, “live feed” and “oil spill” to ensure that when the general public searched for these terms as little bad publicity as possible could be seen.

I’m sure fellow blog reader’s will never have to do anything like this for their business!  But it’s still quite something to see just how much weight is placed on the internet, and in particular, the bearing that key word results can have on your business.

Ads Watchdog now monitoring all internet marketing

It was announced yesterday that all online marketing will now be under the watchful eye of the UK’s Advertising Standard Authority (ASA).

Currently the ASA monitors advertising in paid spaces and sale promotions, but from march 2011, all internet marketing services will be watched over.  This will include material on social networking sites such as Twitter or Facebook, and even advertising on companies own sites.

ASA chairman Lord Chris Smith said: “We have received over 4,500 complaints since 2008 about marketing communications on websites that we couldn’t deal with but from March 1st, anyone who has a concern about a marketing communication online will be able to turn to the ASA.”

Statistics released by  Econsultancy, show that 52 per cent of UK firms intend to increase their spending on pay per click marketing in 2010, while 60 per cent will up their budgets for search engine optimisation.  It seems like this update couldn’t of come at a better time, as with all types of advertising it is important that it is monitored to ensure the best interests of the viewing public are kept.

Optimise becomes RAR accredited!

This week Optimise received some great news, we are now members of the Recommended Agency Register (RAR).  For those of you who aren’t sure what this is, to become RAR accredited you have to be “highly rated by at least three of your clients in the last 12 months to become a recommended agency” (to use RAR’s own words!) .

Not only is becoming RAR accredited great news for us, it’s helpful to prospective, and current clients too, making it easy for clients to differentiate between a reputable web agency and a not so reputable one.

Here at Optimise, we’d like to take this opportunity to say a big thank you to all of our clients, and not just the one’s who’ve rated us so highly on the RAR, we’ve had a great year so far and throughly enjoyed working with each of you, here’s to the rest of the year!
